Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) promotes educational innovation processes and the development of projects related to the permanent improvement of the quality of its teachings. The work developed in the SlideWiki project has been recognized with the granting of an Educational Innovation Project (Proyecto de Innovación Educativa (PIE) in Spanish) titled “A Crowdsourcing-based Approach for the Creation and Improvement of Educational Materials” (“Un Enfoque basado en ‘Crowdsourcing’ para la Creación y Mejora de Materiales Educativos”). This project aims allowing students to be involved in the creation and improvement of educational materials that can serve them for the study and self-learning of knowledge included in different university topics. Information about the project written in Spanish can be found at the UPM Educational Innovation Portal.
This project focuses on encouraging students to learn from the knowledge and experiences of other students. The project is based on
- working in a collaborative way for developing and improving educational resources and
- using the idea of collective intelligence to improve a repository of learning materials.
In addition, the project aims to the promotion of the quality of contents thanks to the collective and collaborative revision and updating of learning materials. The improvement of the educational contents will allow to improve the selection of materials for the study and for self-learning of university subjects.
The idea of the project is to carry out some educational activities in which students can participate by means of creating and improving certain educational materials. This participation of students will be performed through crowdsourcing, an approach that helps to increase both the quantity and the quality of the proposed materials, which will be part of various subjects of diverse educational levels (degree and master) and of different courses.
The activities proposed in this project have been carried out from February to November 2018. These activities have been carried out using the SlideWiki on-line educational content creation platform.
All the subjects involved in this project are offered by the Department of Artificial Intelligence (DIA) of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos (ETSIINF) of the UPM.
The project work team consists mainly of lecturers and professors who belong to the Department of Artificial Intelligence (DIA). Oscar Corcho, Edna Ruckhaus and Mari Carmen Suárez-Figueroa, who is the coordinator of the project, are the members of SlideWiki involved in this educational innovation project.
A paper entitled “Creating and Improving Educational Materials: An Approach based on Crowdsourcing”, which describes the educational innovation project as well as some preliminary results has been presented in the 11th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI 2018). This work was virtually presented in the session about Education Practice Trends and Issues.
